Hybrids and Hybridization Adler, Ava [1], Powers, John [2], Moore, Michael [3], Sakai, Ann [4], Weller, Stephen [5]. Speciation and Gene Flow in Schiedea (Caryophyllaceae). Hybrid zones have been examined to act as conduits of gene flow between species, including alleles that influence the evolution of breeding systems. Using a cross pollination pollen tube growth rate experiment, I assessed the likelihood of reproductive isolating barriers, specifically prezygotic isolating mechanisms, between two phylogenetically related endemic Hawaiian species within the reproductively diverse genus, Schiedea, that form a natural hybrid zone. Schiedea menziesii (hermaphroditic with very rare females known from one population) and S. salicaria (gynodioecious) represent diverse reproductive systems, deeming these species model organisms for analyzing alleles that influence the evolution of breeding systems. Through cross pollinating the two species conspecifically and heterospecifically, and measuring pollen tube growth rates, the rates did not differ, providing no evidence for post pollination, prezygotic isolating mechanisms between S. salicaria and S. menziesii. These results support the hypothesis that closely related species have weaker barriers to reproduction, contributing to studies examining introgression both within this endangered Hawaiian genus and within different taxa with diverse breeding systems.
