Eurasian-Mediterranean and North American evolution and biogeography of Krascheninnikovia ceratoides. Krascheninnikovia ceratoides s. l., the single representative species of this monotypic genus of the Chenopodiaceae family, inhabits cold steppes throughout the northern hemisphere. The species includes two disjunct subspecies: Krascheninnikovia ceratoides subsp. ceratoides shows a wide distribution in Central and Western Asia, Siberia, Eastern Europe and the Anatolian peninsula, with scattered populations in Central Europe and the Mediterranean, whereas Krascheninnikovia ceratoides subsp. lanata is restricted to western and central North America. We reconstructed intraspecific relationships of individuals from populations sampled across its whole distribution area, identified ploidy levels and studied the biogeography of this characteristic steppe and semi-desert plant, using ITS, ETS and the chloroplast intergenic spacer regions atpB-rbcL, rpl32-trnL and trnL-trnF. We only found diploid (east of Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and the USA) and tetraploid (west of Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Russia, and Europe) individuals within our sampling but no hexaploids that have also been reported for the species. Our results indicate that the species may have dispersed from a potential centre of origin in Mongolia, northern China and Middle Asia (i.e., the Altai Mountains region) in two opposite directions – on the one hand, diploids migrated to the east, to eastern Asia and North America, and on the other hand diploids and tetraploids migrated to the west, to western Asia and Europe. Our dated analysis indicates that the first split among extant lineages ofthe species took place in the Early Pleistocene (Gelasian). The spread of the main lineages is likely related to major phases of steppe and semi-desert expansions during glacial periods of the Pleistocene.
