Anatomy and Morphology

Plant Anatomy in times of social isolation – developing teaching material far from the lab.

The world has been facing a pandemic which has demanded the interruption of classes in all teaching levels. Many teaching institutions have chosen to adopt information and communication technologies in order to avoid ceasing its programs completely or even to keep in touch with the students by offering content within such a tough moment. In that context, subjects which require lab environment to occur are facing special difficulty due to the fact that the teacher does not have the necessary tools to develop teaching materials. Within the scope of Biology, Plant Anatomy is one of those school subjects. This current work aims at showing that it is perfectly possible to produce histological images using materials found at home. In order to do so, products which are found in the drawer of the refrigerator (potato, sweet potato, onion, tangerine, coconut and red cabbage) were used. The material was sectioned with disposable blades and stained with textile dyes. Images were obtained through USB digital microscope. The result of the practice shows images of reasonable quality that can be used for video lessons.
