Paleoclimatic inference based on angiosperm wood anatomy from El Bosque Formation (Eocene), Chiapas, Mexico. We recognized 20 different morphotypes of fossil woods from El Bosque Formation (Eocene), Chiapas, Mexico assigned to Fabaceae, Lauraceae, Anacardiaceae, Burseraceae and Malvaceae. These woods (except for the Anacardiaceae) have been collected for the first time in the Eocene flora from Mexico. We identified four new fossil-species, one in Lauraceae, two in Fabaceae (a new fossil-genus) and one in Anacardiaceae (a new fossil-genus). Since the expression of various wood characters depends on more than one climate variable, the woods of El Bosque Formation, Chiapas were analyzed using different statistical approaches and compared with several extant ecological categories (flora from southern California) and communities (Brazil, Mexico and Suriname) in order to determine the general environmental conditions under which the plants of El Bosque Formation grew. In the non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) and cluster the fossil assemblage is nested with highly mesomorphic and hydraulic vulnerable communities. Characters such as vessel diameter, frequency, length and grouping, diffuse porosity, and simple perforation plates suggest this resemblance with tropical rainforest. Prediction equations support that the paleoflora grew under conditions close to that of the tropical rainforest (low potential evaporation, high temperature and water availability). Taxonomic composition, at the family level, suggest similarity with the tropical rainforest of Los Tuxtlas, Veracruz, Mexico.
