Immigrants prevail: lessons from dating the Afroalpine flora. How old is a flora? Did the species that we see today already exist before the flora’s assemblage, or did the origins of species and flora go hand in hand? If so, how long was the lag between formation of habitable conditions and colonization? Did lineages that arrived early then radiate more rapidly? Using novel genome skimming data combined with published matrices and relaxed clock molecular dating methods, we estimate the ages of endemic species of the spectacular tropical Afroalpine Flora. The region consists of isolated volcanoes in East Africa and the highlands of Ethiopia. Research has shown that most lineages colonized the region from other temperate regions of the Northern and Southern Hemisphere and that in situ speciation has been relatively rare. With a phylogenetic hypothesis and timeframe for the entire flora we can better understand why this might be the case.
