The Science of Meaningful Undergraduate Research Experiences McAssey, Edward [1]. The Science of Meaningful Undergraduate Research Experiences. Many principal investigators, post-docs, and graduate students rely on teams of undergraduates to conduct botanical research. In order to highlight the excellent botanical research being undertaken by our earliest career members, we propose a colloquium that showcases both the scientific findings of research done primarily with undergraduates, as well as the creative methods used by research leaders to meaningfully engage undergraduate students in the lab. We envision a variety of PI’s, graduate students, and post-docs participating in this colloquium, as well as current undergraduates who may have otherwise presented a poster, and we have reached out to the local Alaskan botany community as well. The scientific content will encompass all topics of the Botany meeting, with the common theme of undergraduate research and mentoring. In addition to the broadness of the scientific content, we have sought out speakers that represent the diverse ways that collaborative research with undergraduates can succeed, including speakers from Historically Black Colleges and Hispanic Serving Institutions. Finally, the speakers encompass a range of resources in their home institutions, and will therefore bring varied and creative methods for maximizing the benefits of undergraduate research for all involved. In this way, the audience will be exposed to best practices in undergraduate research from both a scientific and logistic angles. Through this colloquium, we are proposing a unique type of talk, one that touches on both the scientific output as well as the undergraduate experience in order to highlight how productive and enriching undergraduate research experiences can be.
