Exploring the utility and limits of target enrichment methods to study polyploidy and reticulate evolution

A phylogenomic investigation into polyploidy and cryptic diversity in the true blueberries (Vaccinium section Cyanococcus).

Vaccinium sect. Cyanococcus (the true blueberries) is a polyploid species complex of ca. 9–16 taxa (diploids, tetraploids, and hexaploids) distributed across temperate North America. Ubiquitous constituents of heathlands and acidophilic plant communities, as well as a food sources for wildlife and humans, these taxa are of immense ecological and economic value. The presence of hybridization and polyploidy, however, has led to much confusion regarding species boundaries and evolutionary history and presents a challenge for phylogenetic analysis. We will present preliminary results based on a HybSeq dataset and a recently developed polyploid allele phasing method that show promise for disentangling this purported highly reticulate clade and infer origins and mode of polyploidization.
