So you want a job in 2020?: Approaching a changing job market as a postdoc.

Events in 2020 have already changed our daily lives, but what about prospects for postdocs approaching the job market? In this discussion panel, we’ll feature diverse voices to provide perspective on what we might expect for the academic and non-academic job markets for the next few years. This panel will be organized into four major sections. First, we’ll start by examining the profound impact the 2008 recession had on the academic job market. Second, we’ll then talk to people who have used their skills and experience from academic labs to successfully transition to non-academic research carriers since the 2008 recession. Third, we’ll hear from researchers who have gone through the faculty job application process in the last few years to learn about current trends in the academic job market. In the fourth and final section, we’ll talk to new faculty who are negotiating and navigating support for starting their labs as the 2020 recession begins to hit university budgets. By bringing these topics together, we will have a timely conversation about how current events may impact the career prospects for botanical postdocs and what postdocs can now do to prepare for their job searches.
