Pieces of the Puzzle: Investigations of Spiromonostichy in the Spiral Gingers (Costus, Costaceae).

Of the ginger-banana clade (Zingiberales), the spiral gingers (Costus, Costaceae) are unique for a charismatic "spiral staircase" phenotype, generated by the growth of leaves in a one-sided spiral that seems to contradict typically held theories of phyllotaxis. The developmental processes which generate this pattern are still not well characterized on many fronts, scaling from the shoot apical meristem to the final shoot morphology of a given plant. In summary of my current and proposed dissertation work, this presentation puts forth (1) morphological data on developmental timepoints in Costus and (2) preliminary genomic searches for PIN1/SoPIN1 proteins across a sample of monocot transcriptomes including Costus and other Zingiberales.
